On the morning of February 6th at Leadbetter Beach, COYA members completed a beach clean-up project that helped raise awareness of the prominence of cigarette butt litter on the beach. We covered a large portion of the beach and surrounding picnic area, collecting cigarette butts and placing a flag down in the ground for every 5 cigarette butts picked up. When we finished the beach was scattered by a surprising amount of flags and as people walked by we explained what they represented. Hopefully raising awareness about this issue will help make our beaches in Santa Barbara smoke free!

This article explains how a new U.S. government study reported that e-cigarette use is most common in the young, current smokers, and those who have recently quit to are trying to quit. Sadly, just as the years of FDA regulation and state policies have begun to reduce tobacco use, the tobacco industry has begun marketing the e-cig to the young generation "in the hopes of developing a whole new lifelong user." To solve this problem, many people are hoping to raise the minimum age of purchasing tobacco and e-cig products to 21. Check it out here! On Monday, October 5th at 5:30 pm in the Louis Lowry Davis Center the Santa Barbara Youth Council, Future Leaders of America, and Coalition of Youth Advocates hosted a City Council Candidate's Forum. The moderators, which were Lily McIntyre, Nathan Alvarez, and Angela Gladkikh, asked the candidates many questions about what makes a community healthy. This also included topics such as youth issues and how the City Council's decisions affect the youth in the community. Each candidate got an opportunity to answer, as well as meet the crowd before and after. Lets hope these candidates did well in the elections!

Today COYA participated in the Assistance League of Santa Barbara's Mock City, where they provided foster youth's real world experiences. Look at our amazing members, Andrew, Lindsey, and Amanda shine next to our beautiful board! COYA has been learning a lot about E Cigarettes lately since they are one of the newest tobacco trends hitting our community, especially with our own classmates and friends. At this week's meeting, Amanda brought an E-cigarette article clipping she found in the local Santa Barbara newspaper,E-Cigarettes a Danger for Young People written by Bill Cirone . It's pretty cool seeing something we are learning about being talked about by others as well! At this week's meeting, Zach brought a very interesting cigarette advertisement he found in a Vogue Magazine. We were all pretty shocked to see such a large advertisement for smoking, since a lot of us thought it was banned in magazines. However, the consensus was that we were not impressed with this hip, alternative vibe Camel is trying to go for. |
